Vampire Book: Dead Until Dark
I finally did it. I bought the ENTIRE vampire book series, starting with Dead Until Dark, by Charlaine Harris.
Now, I absolutely adored the first season of True Blood (to be reviewed shortly!) and was hoping that the books would be as enticing… YES! So far so good!
The first book in the series, Dead Until Dark, introduces us to our unforgettable, eccentric, hilarious and loveable heroine – Sookie Stackhouse.

Sookie Stackhouse
I absolutely love the premise of this book. Vampires have been living besides humans for centuries and with the development of a synthetic blood by Japanese scientists, vampires “came out of the coffin” and into the public eye. The vampires then have to fight for their civil rights.
The story is set in the teeny tiny, yet oh so charming town of Bon Temps, Louisiana. Sookie is a telepathic waitress at the local bar and is just tickled pink when she spies the first ever vampire to set foot in Bon Temps. It doesn’t hurt that the vampire is mysterious, gorgeous and can’t take his eyes off of her.

Sookie & Vampire Bill
Thus starts this wonderfully told story with quirky and characters at every turn, twists and surprises, and hot vampire sex! Oh and we love the hot vampire sex! Oh Sookie!
There are many classic vampire attributes that the author holds on to: vampires can’t go out in sunlight, they can only enter a home when invited (the vampire must leave when this offer is rescinded), an allergy or weakness to silver, exceptional strength, speed, and of course, the lust for blood. The author does go with some of the more modern vampire myths: they don’t mind crosses, they can enter churches and garlic is just merely an annoyance.
One of the most enticing elements of the book for me was blood. First off, the vampires in this story have interesting qualities to their blood – it is a potent drug for humans. It’s not only pleasurable, but it also allows humans who drink a vampire’s blood gain extraordinary strength, heightened perceptions and the ability to heal at a very fast rate. Secondly, if a vampire drank of a human’s blood, they were connected through an emotional bond. The vampire could then sense the feelings of their human and find that person quickly if need be.
I just adored this book and tore right through it. Charlaine Harris writes a very witty story that keeps you interested until you realize that it’s 2am and you reeeeeeeally need to go to sleep!
VVVV (4 fangs for this one, 2 for Bill and 2 for Eric!! All for me, of course!)
You can buy the book here at Amazon.com. You won’t regret it!
