I just finished the non-fiction vampire book by Matthew Beresford called From Demons to Dracula: The Creation of the Modern Vampire Myth.
This book called to me because it is the subject that I am totally obsessed with – the evolution of the vampire myth. It is fascinating how the vampire evolved from a eerie whisper in the night, to a fearful and loathsome blood-sucking monster, to the drop-dead gorgeous, elegant, pensive and sexy creature of today.
And I have to tell you, I ate this book up! I loved it.
The author obviously did his homework – from reading folklore from many different parts of the world, to interviews with the top authorities and authors on vampires, to traveling the world to different vampire hotspots.
I love that at the very beginning of the book, Beresford makes this statement about spirits, ghosts, spectres and monstrous beings, “Whether these are real or imagined is irrelevant; it is the belief in them that enables their power over us.” I really loved that sentiment and it set the stage for the whole book for me.
Beresford makes his way from old folklore, contemplations and investigations on death and burial rituals throughout the ages, the story of Vlad Tepes, the literature of the late 1800′s to today (Stoker, Rice, etc.), Hollywood, to actual vampire haunts and sitings.
The book is really a fascinating read and a definite MUST for anyone interested in the evolution of the vampire and the ongoing human interests and obsessions with fear, death, life and immortality.
VVVVV (yes, that’s right 5 fangs!)
